Mikitenko sits atop the current world marathon majors leaderboard.
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has announced that defending world marathon majors champion Irina Mikitenko will run this year’s event. The German missed the world championship marathon due to her father’s passing, however, she is primed to continue toward a second series championship. Mikitenko currently sits atop the world marathon majors leaderboard with 25 points from her win in London this spring.
Mikitenko joins an already stellar women’s field in Chicago. Previously confirmed for the race was American Olympic bronze medalist Denna Kastor, Russian defending champion Lidiya Grigoryeva, and London Marathon third place finisher Lilya Shobukhova of Russia.
