The snafu turned the 26.2 mile race in to a 400m dash!
At this past weekend’s Des Moines Marathon the race had an unplanned diversion for the leaders as the headed in to the homestretch. Race leaders Simon Sawe found himself trapped behind a train that was crossing over the marathon course. As Sawe waited for the train to pass he was caught by second place David Tuwei and both stood next to the train waiting for it to pass. Once the train passed it was a 400m sprint to the finish for the win. Luckily karma was on his side and Sawe was able to take the win and $3,000 paycheck.
I’ve heard of hitting the wall, but hitting the train? Event organisers were clearly embarassed and said it was something that was planned for but a mistake was made.
