2009 individual and team champions to be decided in Portland.

Written by: Matt Fitzgerald

Only one high school sport determines a national champion through actual competition instead of polls: cross country. But high school cross country has not only one national championship competition, but two: the venerable Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, to be held Saturday, December 12 in San Diego, California; and the upstart Nike Cross Country Nationals, to be contested Saturday, December 5, in Portland, Oregon.

Besides being much younger (the first Nike Nationals were contested in 2005), the Nike Cross Cross Country Nationals differ from Footlocker in that they are used to determine not only the top individual male and female runners but also the number-one school for both boys and girls teams. By contrast, Footlocker selects eight individuals from each of four regions, and those groups of eight form regional teams that exist only for that one race.
