Friday night, legendary American miler Bernard Lagat chases a record 8th Wannamaker Mile victory at the Millrose Games in New York City.

The great Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland won seven Wannamaker miles in the 1970s and ’80s. Bernard Lagat tied that mark at Madison Square Garden last year, and this year he has a chance to beat it. But his eighth Millrose Games victory may be his toughest yet to achieve.

Two strong opponents stand in his way. One is Abel Kiprop, from Lagat’s native Kenya, the reigning Olympic 1500m gold medalist. The other is age. Lagat, himself the owner of an Olympic gold medal, is now 35. There is some precedent in Lagat’s favor, however. Coghlan himself was nearing his 35th birthday when he won his last Wannamaker Mile in 1987.

This year’s Wannamaker Mile will be broadcast live on ESPN2 at 9:50 PM EST.
