Some of America’s best milers will be competing this evening in Minneapolis at the USA Road Mile Championships, organized by Twin Cities in Motion.
Leading the men’s field will be defending champion David Torrence of Oakland, Calif., and the Bay Area Track Club. At last year’s race Torrence covered the point-to-point course in a course record 3:59.3, earning $4,000 in prize money plus a special $10,000 “bounty” for breaking four minutes.
But potentially standing in Torrence’s way of getting the win is Olympian Lopez Lomong, the reigning USA 1500m champion who has 3:32.94 1500m personal best (Torrence has run 3:38.39 and 3:56.69 for the mile). Other contenders include Garrett Heath (3:37.57 PB), Rob Myers (3:34.89) and Darren Brown (3:41.60).
Former steeplechaser Anna Pierce leads the women’s field with a 3:59.38 1500m personal best. Her closest challengers should be Christin Wurth-Thomas, her Olympic teammate from Beijing who has a 1500m personal best of 3:59.98, and former Tennessee star Sarah Bowman, who has run 4:05.67.
The race is still offering $10,000 bounties to the winning man and woman if they break 4:00.00 or 4:32.00, respectively
Both races can be watched LIVE online at http://www.runnerspace.com/USARunningCircuit. The women go first at 7:53 p.m. CST, and the men follow at 8:03 p.m.
