The women’s American record holder at 3K, 5K and 10K says all is going according to plan in her preparations for a marathon debut in New York this fall.
You wouldn’t know from Shalane Flanagan’s recent racing schedule that she is in the thick of the process of transforming herself from a track speedster into a marathon monster. Within the past few weeks she has run a pair of 1500m races and a 5000m on the track and will run three more track races in the next 10 days (two at the U.S. Championships and one at the Prefontaine Classic). But she’s smart–as is her coach, Jerry Schumacher. They know that her best chance of succeeding at longer distances on the roads is to keep her speed even as she builds endurance on top of it.
