Think this means he is no longer concerned about times? Think again.
While in New York City Wednesday for a New York Road Runners Club-sponsored event, marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie announced that he will run the ING New York City Marathon in November. Apparently, NYRR President Mary Wittenberg had been working for years to get him to commit to the race, but he was too focused on trying to break world records, and New York’s is not known as a fast course.
Does Geb’s final capitulation signal that, at age 37, he has given up his quest to break the marathon world record a third time? Maybe privately, but he certainly isn’t talking about slowing down. Geb has already hinted at a bid to break the New York City Marathon course record.
