Fourth stop on IAAF’s Diamond League summer tour doesn’t disappoint.
A crowd of 30,000 at Rome’s Olympic Stadium watched six world-leading performances Thursday night at the Rome Golden Gala, the first of two IAAF Diamond League meets this weekend. The adidas Grand Prix will take place on Saturday at New York’s Icahn Stadium.
Jamaica’s Asafa Powell ran the fastest 100 meters in the world this year, clocking an impressive 9.82 seconds to top the field. Jeremy Wariner of the United States won a close men’s 400 meters, edging out countryman Angelo Taylor, 44.73 to 44.74. In the distance races, Kenyan Milcah Chemos won the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in world-best 9:11.71, while Ethiopian Imane Merga won his second-straight 5,000 meters in 13:00.02, seven seconds off his winning time in Oslo last Friday.
