Tadese, Merga will attempt to knock off defending champion.

He’s not as well known as some of his competitors, but Isaac Macharia, a 1:00:48 half marathoner in his own right, has shown he has what it takes to win big on the world level. At last year’s Bogota International Half Marathon, the Kenyan topped a solid field with a 1:02:49 victory — a feat he hopes to replicate this weekend.

He’ll certainly have his hands full, however, as half marathon world-record holder Zersenay Tadese will be in Colombia looking to keep his recent winning streak alive. Tadese won Europe’s oldest road race, the Giro di Castelbuono, in Italy earlier this week and has a half-marathon personal best over a minute faster than Macaharia’s.

Deriba Merga, the 2009 Boston Marathon champion from Ethiopia is also in the race. He finished fourth in the 2008 Olympic Marathon and has a 59:15 best for the half.
