Former Notre Dame standout runs 14:44.76 to nip Shalane Flanagan’s mark.

Molly Huddle, who broke 15 minutes in the  5,000 meters for the first time in her career earlier this summer, continued her European track tear on Friday, running 14:44.76 to break Shalane Flanagan’s American Record in the 5,000 meters at the Diamond League finale in Brussels.

Taking less than a second off Flanagan’s mark of 14:44.80, Huddle finished tenth in the loaded 17-woman field, in which four women did not finish. Kenyan Vivian Cheruiyot won the race in 14:34.13. Huddle’s previous best of 14:51.84 was run in July at the Diamond League Meeting in Paris. She’s taken over 30 seconds off the 15:17 lifetime best she had heading into the 2010 outdoor season.
