Caster Semenya loses her first race of the season in women’s 800 meters.
Tyson Gay ended his Diamond League season in style on Friday night in Brussels, winning the 100 meters in 9.79 seconds to finish .01 seconds ahead of Jamaican Nester Carter.
Neither of Carter’s countrymen, Usain Bolt or Asafa Powell were on the starting line Friday night. Both bowed out beforehand in what was supposed to be the most sensational sprinting showdown of the season.
In other action, reigning women’s 800-meter world champion Caster Semenya of South Africa suffered her first lost of the summer, finishing third behind Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei in the two-lap race. Semenya’s time of 1:59.65 was a season’s best for the 19-year-old who was selected to represent her country at the Commonwealth Games in October.
