Bahrain Prevails At Asian Games

It was an exciting and unpredictable finish in the men’s 10,000m race.
Bilisuma Shugi Gelassa of Bahrain won the men’s 10,000m race at the Asian games in Guangzhou, China on Friday. The 21-year-old former Ethiopian won with a personal best of 27:32.72–an Asian Games record. The race had been an exciting one with Gelassa using the last three laps to catch Essa Ismal Rashed of Qatar. In the finishing stretch, Rashed tried to catch Gelassa, but Gelassa prevailed ultimately, raising his finger in the air as he crossed the finish. Gelassa took third place at the West Asian championships at Aleppo, Syria, last September.
A disappointed Rashed had expected to win the race. “I should have got the gold,” he said afterwards. “I felt very painful in my stomach. I tried to push myself but didn’t manage to make it.”
Continuing Bahrain’s success, Mimi Belete won the women’s 5,000m in the last day of track events. Belete’s winning time was 15:15.59.
