Blatantly disregarding the rules, injured runners are charging as much as $500 for the highly sought-after chance to run through New York’s five boroughs.

Demand is greater than supply when it comes to running the ING New York City Marathon, with over 120,000 runners desiring just 60,000 available slots. This surge in demand has created a black market for bibs on Craigslist.

Charging $300 for her bib, an anonymous runner posted this ad: “An injury is keeping me from running this year, but my bad luck could be your good fortune.”

There are just as many runners using the free Web site in the hopes of finding a bib for sale. “I am hoping to find a bib for New York so all of my training isn’t wasted!” a hopeful marathoner posted. Legal marathon entries cost $196 for American marathoners and $276 for overseas runners.
