Like Meb Keflezighi in the men’s race, Ethiopian Derartu Tulu is back to defend her New York City Marathon title. Can she pull off the repeat? Standing in her way is a deep women’s field, led by marathon veterans like Ludmila Petrova and Inga Abitova of Russia along with reigning Boston Marathon champion Teyba Erkesso of Ethiopia. A talented field of newcomers to the 26.2-mile distance will also be looking to knock off Tulu, as the United States’ Shalane Flanagan, Ethiopia’s Werknesh Kidane and Kenya’s Mary Keitany are all making their marathon debuts.
