Ultra enthusiasts are saying this event may have one of the best fields ever assembled for a 50-mile trail race.

One of the world’s most competitive trail 50-mile races will take place this Saturday in Marin, California: the North Face Endurance Challenge. At the top of the men’s list is Uli Steidl. Steidl boasts a lifetime marathon PR of 2:13 and has recently run a 2:27 marathon in Cologne, Germany. One of his key rivals is American Geoff Roes. Roes won this year’s Western States 100 -Mile race and set the course record there. He has recently moved from Alaska to Boulder, Colorado. Also in the running is Dave Mackey, the best sub-100-mile trail runner in the past 10 years. Mackey owns the Miwok 100K course record (7:53:19).

Other contenders include 19-year-old Dakota Jones and Jez Bragg of the United Kingdom. Bragg won this year’s Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc and was third in the 2009 edition of the Western States 100.

One notable runner missing is Anton Krupicka who pulled out due to a calf injury.
