The “Ultra Marathon Man” is now giving frozen yogurt retail a try.

He’s run 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days. He’s written a book that’s on Sarah Palin’s must-read list. Now, America’s famous “Ultra Marathon Man”  is doing something entirely different: opening a frozen yogurt franchise.

According to an article on, Karnazes will open a “U-Top It” frozen yogurt store in Marin County, California. The store is the brainchild of Redding, California resident Jennifer Ketels who grew up with Karnazes.

“He’s a big deal in the fitness and running world,” Ketels said. “Dean and I grew up next door to each other; he drove me to high school every day. … Now he is like this celebrity — but he’s just Dean to me.”

Karnazes admits that the two have stayed in touch over the years and that he’s “really impressed with her operation.”

The famous ultra runner signed an agreement with Ketels to ultimately open five yogurt stores. He paid an initial licensing fee of $25,000 and 4 percent of his monthly gross sales will go to Ketels.
