Shalane Flanagan now has a female training partner.
Up until last fall, Shalane Flanagan had been the only woman training with the Oregon Track Club’s distance group.
“I’m kind of a tomboy, so I fit in pretty well,” Flanagan recalls. However, Flanagan asked her coach Jerry Schumacher for a female training partner. With Flanagan’s approval, Schumacher selected Lisa Koll.
Koll had just graduated from Iowa State at the top of her game, having won both the 5,000m and 10,000m NCAA titles. According to an article posted on Oregon Live, Flanagan had never physically met Koll, but the two “knew each other from a distance.”
“Tough, little snot,” Flanagan says of Koll. “You could just tell she is really tenacious, just a fierce competitor, driven.”
When Koll found out that Flanagan wanted to train with her, she was thrilled. “Shalane is running royalty,” Koll adds. “To know she wanted me as a training partner, I was very humbled and very excited. What better person to learn from?”
Last September, Koll put vet school on hold and moved to Oregon.
