Coaching a lot of top talent can be demanding.

Oregon Track Club’s Jerry Schumacher has been all over the world lately. The coach of Shalane Flanagan, Schumacher found himself in Sweden two weeks ago to watch his athlete’s 3,000m indoor race in Stockholm. A week later, he was halfway across the world, in Australia, to supervise Chris Solinsky, Andrew Bumbalough, and Matt Tegenkamp as they secured their Olympic ‘A’ standard in the 5,000m at the Melbourne Track Classic in Australia.

“I’m really happy with the Australia results,” Schumacher said of the race. “It was a nice, early-season race.” That next day, he and has athletes were on a plane back to the United States.
“It was a great trip, but basically a business trip,” Schumacher said.

Schumacher now heads to Punta Umbria, Spain for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. There, he will be coaching Lisa Koll on the women’s team and Andrew Bumbalough on the men’s team. Matt Tegenkamp was to compete as well, but opted out of the team.
