Race Day Checklist

When you go to gather everything you need for race day, make sure you have everything. I can’t count how many times I have thought about how I needed to pack my gel or iPod into my bag and then forget all about it. It is especially important to make sure you have everything packed if you are traveling. The morning of the race is not a good time to realize you only packed one shoe. Whether you are at home or in a hotel room, take the time to lay everything out the afternoon before the race to make sure nothing slipped by. If you did forget socks, you’ll have time to go buy some; try not to forget your shoes, though. That gets a little trickier. And if you are at home, you’ll have everything ready the night before so you can avoid scrambling at 5 a.m. to find the charger to your iPod.

  • Shirt
  • Shoes
  • Shorts
  • Sports bra
  • Socks
  • iPod and headphones—charge it the night before
  • Charged watch/GPS—charge it the night before and make sure it is actually charging and not just plugged in
  • Race bib pinned with four safety pins to your shirt or on your race belt
  • Timing chip on your shoe
  • ID—you might not get into the beer garden otherwise
  • Breakfast—make sure you know what you’re going to eat and check to see if you have all the ingredients. And then tell your roommate/spouse/kids not to touch it.
  • Anti-chafe gel—there is nothing worse than chafing
  • Gel/chomps/sports drink
  • Directions to and from the race/ transportation schedules
  • Hat/visor/hair tie/headband
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
