A little preparation and you’ve got yourself the perfect post-run treat.

It’s hot outside. While you may think there’s no better way to reward yourself for shunning the treadmill and running outside in the drippy, intensely sunny conditions than the bottle of apple juice or Gatorade you stashed in the freezer before you headed out, consider biting and slurping one, two or three homemade popsicles. Made specifically to address post-workout needs like protein for muscle and tissue repair, carbs for glycogen replenishment, and electrolytes to get your body back in balance, these pops taste more like treats than runner food. All it takes is some advanced preparation.
Note: I don’t mind small chunks of fruit or herbs in my popsicles, but if that bothers you, make sure to strain the mixtures through a fine-mesh sieve before you pour them into the popsicle molds.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Freezer pop molds
- Time—about 10 minutes of prep time and six hours to overnight to allow pops to solidify
Sweet and Salty Lime Yogurt Pops
1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
zest of 2 limes
4 tablespoons agave nectar (or honey)
16 ounces plain low-fat or non-fat yogurt
1 teaspoon coarse salt
In a blender, whizz the lime juice, zest, agave or honey, and yogurt together. Stir in salt with a wooden spoon. Pour mix into the popsicle molds, press on the lids and transfer to the freezer until frozen (six hours to overnight).
Cucumber Honeydew Mint Pops
1 3 1/2-pound ripe honeydew melon, peeled, seeded and cut into one-inch cubes
1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and cut into small cubes
1/4 cup Stevia or granulated sugar
1 small bunch mint, washed and stems removed
2 scoops plain whey protein powder
In a small saucepan over medium heat, dissolve Stevia or sugar in water. Allow syrup to cool. Blend the melon and cucumber until smooth. Add cooled syrup, protein power and mint and buzz until smooth. Pour into molds and freeze.
Spiced Cocoa Pops
2 cups plain rice milk
1 cup water
2 scoops Herbalife Rebuild Strength chocolate flavor
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
In a large mixing bowl, whisk all ingredients together except for chocolate chips—stir in chips after other ingredients are well combined. Pour mixture into molds and freeze.
