The Lake Atitlán Marathon is held in May in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, the “Land of the Living Maya”. Lake Atitlán supports 12 lakeside communities and is in a bowl 1560 meters or 5,100 feet above sea level, surrounded by even higher volcanoes and steep slopes.

Mario Fraioli is a senior editor at Competitor magazine. A cross-country All-American at Stonehill College in 2003, he now coaches the Prado Women's Racing Team in San Diego and was the men's marathon coach for Costa Rica's 2012 Olympic team.
