PICKENS, S.C. – Jonathan Allen and Ashley Anderson took first-place honors in the XTERRA Trail Run Series’ inaugural race at Table Rock State Park in Pickens, S.C. on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011.
Allen was the overall winner, completing the 15K course in 1 hour, 43 minutes, 28 seconds. Anderson was the top female, finishing with a time of 1:53:43.
“The reason I entered was because I couldn’t pass up participating on the first trail race on the wonderful trails in Table Rock State Park,” said Allen, 32. “The course was definitely challenging, yet not too extreme, and was very enjoyable and picturesque.”
Allen led the race from start to finish, and wound up running away from the rest of the competition. He finished nearly five minutes ahead of the runner-up. Jeff Dixon placed second in 1:48:27, and Spencer Beamer was third in 1:49:53.
Allen said he heard Dixon approaching from behind midway through the course, so he pushed hard for the final four miles to create separation.
Allen, who works as an engineer in Greenville, S.C., said he received an added boost at the finish line when he was greeted by his wife and two daughters.
Anderson placed sixth overall and ran away from the other female runners. Lauren Bosshardt placed second in 1:57:08, and was the only other female to complete the course in less than two hours.
“I decided to participate in the event after persuading two of my good friends to go with me (Spencer Beamer finished third overall and Megan Lordi finished first in her age group),” said Anderson, 23. “Before, during, and after the race, they joked that they were going to kill me for making them do the race. They have not killed me yet, but I think it is because none of us can walk!”
Anderson might have finished with an even faster time were it not for her inexperience with XTERRA Trail Runs. In particular, her choice of footwear was not quite suited for the technical sections of the course.
“The trail down was like chutes and ladders, and I was running in standard road trainers,” she said. “I looked enviously at the padded soles of my group’s shoes as I slipped down the side of the mountain. My descent was not pretty, but I made it.”
Anderson was once a cross country runner at Vanderbilt University, and more recently competed as a semi-professional cyclist. She currently works as an assistant research coordinator, with hopes of attending medical school.
The XTERRA Table Rock Trail Run was the third of three races in the 2011 XTERRA South Carolina Trail Run Series. The top age-group winners from the overall series standings received a free entry to the 2011 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship at Ogden, Utah, on Saturday, Sept. 24.
