Fitzgerald’s Iron War Receiving Rave Reviews

New book takes a deeper look at one of the greatest races ever run.

Iron War, a new book authored by endurance sports journalist Matt Fitzgerald, retells the story of one of the greatest endurance races ever run, the 1989 Ironman World Championship.  The 336-page hardcover edition examines the epic battle between triathletes Dave Scott and Mark Allen, taking a deeper look at how these two fierce rivals pushed themselves to the absolute limits of human performance on the sport’s biggest stage in Kona, Hawaii.

Since it’s official release on Saturday, October 1–one week before this year’s Ford Ironman World Championship–the book has take off amongst triathletes, runners and fans, providing a gripping narrative and inspiring account of physical preparedness and mental toughness.

After being on the market for just nine days, Iron War has climbed to #2 in the Triathlon category on Amazon.com. Early reviews of the book have been overwhelmingly positive, with Tom Demerly of tri-sports.com saying, “Iron War is our Into Thin Air. Captivating, animated, uniquely readable and downright thrilling. This is a truly great read- and an ode to our sport with all its quirky characters and epic venues.”

Mary Frances Wilkens of Booklist Online calls the book, “A true page-turner about a too-little-known great moment in sports.”

And Slowtwitch.com says, “Dave Scott and Mark Allen had one of the greatest battles in sport history during their epic 1989 Ironman Hawaii matchup. Matt Fitzgerald captures the spirit of that duel in Iron War: Dave Scott, Mark Allen and the Greatest Race Ever Run. Iron War really a book that should be on your bookshelf if you have even the slightest interest in the sport of triathlon, but it also is a great read for anyone looking for inspiration in general.”
