The men’s race wasn’t decided until the final 100 meters.
It was a great day to be an Ethiopian distance-running fan on Sunday. In New Delhi, Lelisa Desisa defeated Kenyan rival Geoffrey Kipsang to win the Aritel Delhi Half Marathon.
Desisa’s finishing time was 59:30.
After 20K, the pack had thinned down to just Desisa and Kipsang who ran stride for stride throughout the Indian capital. The race wasn’t decided until the final 100 meters in the straight that takes the runners into Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Desisa’s time was the third-fastest in the history of the race.
“This year’s race is good,” Desisa said afterwards. “I am a bit disappointed as I could not post a course record. I had discomfort due to cold, otherwise I could have posted a sub-58 mark.”
Third place went to Mike Kigen of Kenya in 59:58. All three of the top male finishers set PRs in the race.
In the women’s race, Kenya’s Lucy Kabuu Wangui was victorious over Sharon Cherop by a four-second margin.
