New details are coming around about the third-place finisher at last weekend’s ING New York City Marathon, Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia. It turns out the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist had been suffering an ankle injury a month leading up to the New York race.

“I only got one month’s training after it healed,” said Kebede who finished behind Geoffrey and Emmanuel Mutai last weekend. “Before that, it was difficult.”

Kebede revealed that he underwent treatment in Europe, which is why he didn’t compete in the World Championship marathon in Daegu several months ago. Despite the short amount of time he had to prepare for New York, Kebede was confident he could run 2:05 on the difficult New York course.

“The race was more or less very good for me,” Kebede said of last weekend’s race. “It’s a new race for me. I’ve never run here before and although the course has a lot of uphills and downhills, it was good for me. So I believe it went well.”
