Tinker Bells Toll Over Anaheim

Kellie Nickerson of Albuquerque N.M. wins the inaugural Tinker Bell Half Marathon at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif. with a 1:27:52 finish.

12,000 runners earning their wings at the first-ever Tinker Bell Half Marathon.

A spectacle of fairies and pixie dust ruled the Disneyland Resort and the streets of Anaheim, Calif. this past weekend.

The ultimate girls’ weekend welcomed a sea of fairy wings and green tutus that took to the start line of the debut race on Sunday morning for 13.1 miles of fun through Disneyland, Disney’s California Adventure and several city of Anaheim landmarks.

Kellie Nickerson of Albuquerque, N.M. captured the title with a 1:27:52 finish, earning her commemorative Tinker Bell “wings” medal.

Course entertainment and crowd support stretched for miles, as famous Disney faces cheered on runners at every turn. Other notable participants include “Rules of Engagement” actress Megyn Price and “Lord of the Rings” actor Sean Astin.

Festivities for the inaugural race weekend kicked off Jan. 27 with the Neverland Family Fun Run 5K, where roughly 4,000 runners decked out in Disney costumes enjoyed the opportunity to be the very first ones to trek through the Disney parks at night.

The “Peter Pan”-themed event felt more like a party than a race, as a fairy-dressed DJ pumped up the crowd with Top 40 music under the lights of Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland Park before sending them off for the 10:30pm start.

“Following the Leader” blasted over speakers as runners journeyed past iconic attractions like It’s a Small World with surprise visits from characters from the film, including the Lost Boys and Captain Cook. The three-miler finished at the Paradise Pier in California Adventure where runners were welcomed by Wendy and Peter Pan, himself.

The Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend is the second women-focused event weekend in the runDisney series. Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend takes place at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida Feb. 24-26. Both event weekends are among the largest women-specific events in the country.
