UK Coach Not Worried About European Medals

He wants his athletes to just prepare for the London Games.

Charles van Commenee, the head coach of the UK Athletics squad that heads to this week’s European Championships, says getting his athletes on the podium is not the main focus.

Rather, van Commenee says he wants his athletes to “test yourself or select yourself” for the Olympics.

Mo Farah, who owns multiple British records on the track, will defend his 5,000m title in Helsinki at the Championships.

“I always said this was to be seen in the light of preparation for the Games,” Van Commenee said. “It was never a purpose to select the best possible team to get a great number of medals.”

Van Commenee doubted that the British medal haul would equal that of the last European Championships in Barcelona.

“I have approached this championship very much from an individual interest per athlete,” he said.

A total of 82 athletes are going to represent the British team in Helsinki.
