Chia seeds offer protein, fiber and Omega-3s.
Chia seeds, often coined a super food, are a major nutrition trend among health-conscious athletes because of the seeds’ robust protein, fiber and omega-3 offerings. While chia seeds are available in bulk to add to soups, salads, sauces and a variety of other preparations, there is also an increasing variety of pre-made products containing the seeds, including meal replacement bars and protein bars, among others. We came across a unique drink that showcases these tiny nutritional powerhouses in their whole-seed form: Mamma Chia.
The Mamma Chia line of drinks will definitely catch your eye on the supermarket shelves, as the whole seeds create a unique visual through the glass bottles. We sampled several flavors including blackberry hibiscus and coconut mango and were surprised at the pleasantly mild flavors and a touch of sweetness that didn’t overpower.
The kicker with this drink is texture, though, as it has a slime factor some may find unappealing. But if the texture is tolerable, the nutritional label should seal the deal that this drink is a healthful option: 2500 mg of omega-3s, four grams of protein, gluten-free, vegan and 120 calories.
