It will be Ethiopia versus Kenya in the men’s and women’s divisions.
Italy will be the place for a classic duel between World Cross Country Champion Imane Merga and Olympic 5000m bronze medalist Thomas Longosiwa at the BOclassic on New Year’s Eve.
Merga, who is Ethiopian, missed out on competing in the London Games due to an injury. On the other hand, Longosiwa, from Kenya, has made progress on his 5,000m PR, reducing it to 12:49.04.
Despite the edge towards the Kenyan, Merga has experience on the course, having run it twice. He was victorious in the 2010 edition of the race.
Scott Bauhs will be representing the United States. He has a good history with the BOclassic. In 2010, Bauhs placed fifth overall there.
Two Italians will be hoping for some home-country support: steeplechase specialist Yuri Floriani and Italian 5000m champion Stefano La Rosa.
In the women’s race, all eyes will be on two-time world silver medalist in the 5000m, Sylvia Kibet. The Kenyan will square off against 21-year-old Afera Godfay of Ethiopia who nearly defeated Vivian Cheruiyot at the Italian race last year.
