The Olympic gold medalist in the marathon heads back to England in April.
Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda wasn’t a favorite to win the gold medal in the 2012 Olympic Marathon. After all, that honor was expected to go to someone from the Kenya or Ethiopia.
But Kiprotich threw down a huge move in the final 5K of that race to win in 2:08:01.
Now the Ugandan, who is that nation’s second gold medalist, will return to London. He will compete in the marathon there in April and has high expectations of his performance.
“I need to prepare well and go to London to run my personal best,” he said. “I saw the start list and it is a compilation of strong athletes. If I run a personal best, no matter I win or not, everything will be okay.”
“It was a good day for me to run at the London Olympics. Winning just comes to luck, to me it was a lucky thing. I liked the way I ran and I did not fear the two Kenyans who are strong guys but I had a strong feeling.”
