INDIANAPOLIS – Galen Rupp of Portland, Ore., has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting the 3,000m indoor American record of 7:30.18 at the IAAF XL Galan Indoor Meeting in Stockholm.
Rupp’s time in the 3,000m set a meet record and garnered Rupp his second world leading mark of the season, as he already owns the fastest time in the mile.
Rupp knocked off more than two seconds from Bernard Lagat’s previous American record of 7:32.48, which he set in 2007.
Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
