He isn’t ready to hang up his shoes just yet.
Even though he’s nearly 40 years old, Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie is not yet done competing.
The former world record holder in the marathon will lace up his running shoes in the United Kingdom on May 26 to compete in the Bupa Great Manchester Run, an annual 10K that began in 2003.
“How could I resist the opportunity to return to Manchester?” Gebrselassie told the Manchester Evening News. He has won the last four editions of the race.
On being called one of the sport’s all-time greats, Gebrselassie said, “I feel very honored and flattered. There have been many great athletes in history, and it makes me proud that people talk about me like that. I love running, it is part of my life and part of my daily routine.”
Throughout his storied career, Gebrselassie has owned a total of 27 global distance records. He is considered by many to be one of the most talented distance runners ever to compete in the sport.
