Security is top priority for the World Championships in August.

In light of recent tragic events at the Boston Marathon, race organizers all over the world are now dealing with how to provide the correct amount of security at large races.

At the forthcoming World Championships marathon in Moscow, officials there aren’t pulling any punches and have announced that they will have metal detectors for all spectators who wish to watch the 26.2-mile race.

“Obviously, the marathon requires extra protection, not only for the runners but for spectators as well,” said Russian athletics chief Valentin Balakhnichyov. ”The only way to guarantee sufficient security for those coming to watch the races is to install metal detectors along the entire 26.2-mile course.”

He continued: “At the same time we don’t want to make Moscow a ghost town. We must make sure that spectators, including foreign guests, are not scared away by overzealous policing.”

The Moscow marathon will take runners past famous landmarks such as the Kremlin, and then finish at the Luzhniki stadium.
