Cadet: Betty Crecelius

Age: 63 | City: Stockton, Calif.

Betty is the only cadet who actually inspired her veteran to start running.

“My mom has been a runner since as long as I can remember and at the age of 12 she introduced me to the sport,” says veteran runner Melissa Simonds-Williams. “Being an athlete her whole life and challenging herself with various distances, she never managed to run a full marathon. At the age of 63 she has now completed over 10 half marathons and has set a new goal of completing a marathon.”

So this time around, Melissa will hope to return the favor and help her mother cross the finish line.

Vet: Melissa Simonds-Williams

Age: 31 | City: Sacramento, Calif.

Melissa finished her first marathon last year. “I always played sports that involved running, but had my mother never introduced me to long distance running, I may not thought it possible to complete distances such as a marathon,” she says. “It’s an activity that we can still share together.”

Running Retail Sponsor: Fleet Feet Sports Sacramento

Goal Race: California International Marathon, Dec. 8

The Saucony 26 Strong project will pair experienced marathoners (“vets”) with first-timers (“cadets”) as they both train to achieve their marathon goals. Although running is an individual sport, these runners will exemplify how we are stronger as teams than alone.
