The 21st annual Jupiter Peak Steeplechase on Aug. 3 in Park City, Utah, was the final event in the 10-race, 2013 La Sportiva Mountain Cup trail running series. More than 300 runners toed the line under sunny skies, but, for some, the race began back in February at Moab’s Red Hot 33K, the first race in the series. Many of the top runners in the points standings were in Park City to compete for their portion of a $25,000 prize purse, ensuring fast times on the grueling, 16-mile course, dubbed “a beast” by one weary racer. Starting at Park City Mountain Resort’s First Time Parking lot, elevation 7,000 feet, racers pointed uphill for roughly eight miles of climbing as they made their way to the top of 10,400-foot Steeplechase Peak with some high-elevation scrambling along the way. Eight miles of leg-searing descent provided no relief, although the views and predominately singletrack course received high praise from participants once they crossed the finish line.
