He set a course record at the Tussey Mountainback 50 Mile.
Matt Flaherty’s achievement at the Tussey Mountainback 50-Mile Road Championships in Boalsburg, Pa., covering that distance in 5:28:11 to break the course record, was good enough to get him the honor of USATF’s Athlete of the Week.
Flaherty seized the lead early and never looked back. His father provided crew support for him “I opened up a nice cushion,” Flaherty recalled. “It saved me at the end when it got tough.”
The race served as the USATF’s 50-Mile Road Championships for the year.
Cassie Scallon, Flaherty’s teammate, won the women’s title and came in third overall. She clocked 6:24:01 — a personal best.
USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
