The 53-year-old actor has been helping Haiti since the 2010 earthquake.
USA Today is reporting that Hollywood actor Sean Penn has stepped up to support Haitian runners. Penn’s relief organization, J/P HRO, will send five competitors to New York next month where they will take part in the ING New York City marathon.
Penn spoke with the Associated Press last weekend about the race and his organization’s progress in assisting residents from the country that was devastated in an earthquake three years ago.
“It’s rewarding. I just came back from Port-au-Prince, where I visited our Haitian marathon runners, and to see that great discipline that Haitians have and that great spirit and the excitement that they have visiting New York for the first time,” said the 53-year-old Penn.
The 2010 earthquake killed more than 100,000 people.
“I’ve got a group I’m very proud of and really inspired by,” said Penn. “Let’s say I’ve been granted a fortunate ticket in.”
The New York City Marathon is slated for Nov. 3.
