The 14-year-old did it for her late father.
She’s just 14 years old, but Winter Vinecki has a world record. The Oregon resident completed a marathon in Athens, Greece last weekend and this made her the youngest person ever (male or female) to complete a marathon on all seven continents.
Vinecki finished Sunday’s race in 4:03:53.
“This is for you, dad,” she said at the finish line, referring to her father who passed away from prostate cancer when she was just 5 years old.
“It hasn’t quite set in yet,” Vinecki said. “I know that I’ve done something amazing here, but I can’t really put into words how it feels yet; I guess the word would be magical.”
Vinecki’s mother, Dawn Estelle, accompanied her. Together, the two also set a world record for the first mother-daughter duo to complete a marathon on every continent.
“It’s been such a long and emotional journey,” Estelle said. “It’s hard to comprehend the impact we’ve had on the world right now, and it may take several months — maybe years before I’ll fully understand it, but I know it’s been so positive in so many ways to so many people.”
