Captain Calway was the women’s champion at the Marine Corps Marathon.
Kelly Calway’s win at last weekend’s Marine Corps Marathon was fitting. Though the N.C. State grad isn’t in the Marine Corps, she is a soldier — serving as a Military Intelligence officer in the Army.
Calway was recognized by the USATF as their “athlete of the week” this week. She won the Marine Corps Marathon in two hours 42:16.
A week earlier, she prevailed at the Army 10-Miler.
“I started running when I was 8, when my family lived in Hawaii,” Calway said. “I was an Army brat, I ran everywhere starting from bantams at USATF meets through college. In college. I ran middle distance. My parents did marathons, so I couldn’t wait to get out of college to run one.”
Calway is currently stationed in Fort Carson, Colo. She is part of the Army’s World-Class Athlete Program.
She will soon deploy to Kuwait with an infantry battalion.
