Distance Legend Severely Injured By Car While Running

Sonja Laxton has broken 28 South African records.

Some sad news out of South Africa: Sonja Laxton, who owns more than 70 national titles and has competed for more than five decades, was severely injured in a hit-and-run incident last weekend.

According to Super Sport, Laxton’s daughter Kim confirmed that her mother was in critical-but-stable condition.

“They’ll need to repair all her joints that are broken,” Laxton’s daughter confirmed. Specifically, Sonja had her elbows, shoulders, as well as ribs broken. Her spleen was “nicked,” but it appears that no other major organs were damaged.

There are no more details available about the incident other than it happened around 8 a.m. on Sunday and that the car had been most likely speeding through an intersection.

“I usually train with my mom and she is very careful on the road,” Laxton’s daughter said. ”I can’t imagine her running through an intersection, so we’ll have to try and find out what happened.”
