The 21-year-old med student ran a six-minute improvement.
According to a race report posted on the Santa Barbara Independent’s website, Elisa Karhu didn’t just win the Select Staffing Santa Barbara Veterans Marathon last Saturday, she blew away the field.
Karhu, a med student, ran 26.2 miles in 2:42:42.
“I kind of freaked out halfway when I saw how fast I’d gone out,” she said. Her time at the 13.1-mile point was 1:18:56 — faster than any women who were competing at that distance.
Only two male competitors finished ahead of her.
“This is the best race I’ve ever run,” she said. Karhu didn’t pick up running until her senior year in high school. Her first race was the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon when she was 16. There, she ran a 3:45.
In the men’s race, Kenya’s Peter Kemboi won in 2:32:08. Julian Spence of Australia was third.
