When 50,000 runners finish a race, there are a lot of numbers you can crunch.

The 2013 New York City Marathon will go down as the largest marathon in history, with a record number 50,304 runners finishing this year’s race out of 50,740 starters. There were 109 countries represented as well as runners from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The oldest female finisher was 86-year-old Joy Johnson of California, who finished in 7:57:41. The oldest male finisher was Colin Thorne, 89, of New Zealand, who crossed in 6:30:09. Thirty-year-old Julissa Sarabia of New York was the one millionth starter in race history, finishing in 5:19:47. Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya repeated as men’s champion, running 2:08:24, while Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya won the women’s race in 2:25:07. Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men’s wheelchair race in 1:40:14, while Tatyana McFadden took the women’s crown in 1:59:13.
As you might imagine with 50,000 participants, there’s a lot of information about them that becomes available afterward. Raymond Britt of RunTriMedia.com has gathered data about the number of participants and their finishing times from this year’s race and compared it the 2009 edition of the race (the last one he had a complete data set for), which had 43,000 finishers. This information is compiled it into 11 informative charts and graphs, found below.
