Slot canyons, slick rock and sand greeted runners in Moab, Utah.

Brilliant blue skies and temperatures hovering around freezing signaled the start of an ideal desert running day for the 1,500+ racers who gathered outside of Moab, Utah, on Nov. 2 for the Moab Trail Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K.

Half-marathoners and marathoners began in waves to help eliminate congestion on the course. Richard Bolt of USATF said the Moab race was chosen for the Championships because race director Danelle Ballengee, a former member of the U.S. Mountain Running Team, puts on a good event.

“It’s also important to us to select courses that have the fun and authentic variability that comes with trail running,” Bolt said. “This course is harder and more technical than what many runners are used to.”
