USATF Announces Mountain, Trail and Ultra Awards

On Tuesday, the Mountain/Ultra/Trail running (MUT) Council named the 2013 USA Track & Field Mountain Runners of the year, Trail Runners of the Year, and Contributor of the Year, according to examiner.com. The award winners, listed below, will be recognized at the USATF Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, IN this Friday and Saturday.

Mountain men open: Joseph Gray, 29, Lakewood, WA, is the recipient of the Lyndon Ellefson Memorial Award as the 2013 men’s mountain runner of the year. Gray had an outstanding year winning the U.S. Mountain Running Championships title in July, as well as his fifth consecutive NACAC Mountain Championships title. He was the top American at the World Mountain Running Championships in Poland, finishing seventh.

Mountain men master: Todd Callaghan, 44, Beverly, MA, was first master at the USA Mountain Running Championships, the Mount Washington Road Race, and the USA 10km Trail Championships.

Mountain women open: Stevie Kremer, 29, Crested Butte, CO, won the USA Trail Marathon Championships at the Pikes Peak Marathon coming very close to a record-setting performance. She also posted wins at the 23.5km Limone Extreme Skyrace in Italy, the 31.1km Hermannslauf Race in Germany, and Marathon du Mont Blanc in France. She was second at the highly competitive Sierre-Zinal Mountain Race in Switzerland as well as the USA Mountain Running Championships.

Mountain women master: Magdalena Lewy-Boulet, 40, Oakland, CA, was a newcomer to the mountain scene in 2013. She finished in third place at the USA Mountain Running Championships to earn a spot on her first US Mountain Running Team. She was the top American at the World Mountain Running Championships finishing in eleventh place.

Trail men open: Mario Mendoza, 27,Bend, OR, won the USA 10km Trail Championships, the Dirty Half Marathon, the Lake Padden Trail Half Marathon, Kilian’s Classic 10K in France, Angels Staircase 60km, and the Peterson Ridge Rumble 20 Miler. He finished second overall at the USA 50km Trail Championships.

Trail women open: Stevie Kremer also won this category repeating the title she co-shared last year with Megan Kimmel.

Contributor of the Year: Brian Metzler, Boulder, CO. Metzler, who currently serves as editor-in-chief of Competitor magazine and competitor.com, has been reporting on mountain, trail and ultrarunning for over two decades, and his support as a writer, competitor, race director, and coach earned him the designation of Contributor of the Year for 2013. “I’m very honored and thrilled to be named USA Track & Field’s Mountain/Ultra/Trail Contributor of the Year for 2013,” Metzler said. “Props to the runners of the year and everyone who’s out on the trails getting after it.”
