Day 5: Saturday, January 11

Brian Metzler, Editor-in-Chief:  After a full day of snowboarding fresh powder at Beaver Creek Resort, I slipped on a pair of Salomon Spikecross 3 shoes (a trail running shoe with carbide spikes) and went for a 50-minute run over frozen/snow-packed roads and trails at sunset. Perfect way to end a great day!

Mario Fraioli, Senior Editor: I drove into San Francisco in the morning to lead the 5K fun run at the course launch party for the Transamerica Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco Half Marathon, which takes place in April. It was very foggy and raw, but a great morning for running. In the afternoon I got out for a quick 35-minute run from home to get in some additional mileage for the day.

Caitlyn Pilkington, Associate Editor: I went to Santa Barbara for the weekend and ran my old route for the first time in five years. I remembered all the right turns and threw in some pick-me-up minutes in the middle. It was well worth it when I got my favorite smoothie after — still unmatched by any place in San Diego!

Jason Devaney, Associate Web Editor: Rain, rain, rain. The wet weather kept my bike tethered to the trainer for another day. I put in an hour doing this TOUGH workout. My legs are still feeling it a day and a half later.

Allison Pattillo, Contributing Editor: The fact that it was a bluebird powder day made hitting the slopes a must. After downhilling for the day, I went for a 30 minute skate ski with my kids. Trying to keep up with them turned it into a surprise sprint workout. Shoveling snow for an hour served as a core workout–it should count, right?!
