Photos: Meb Keflezighi Wins The Boston Marathon

On April 21, Meb Keflezighi set a new PR in becoming the first American man to win the Boston Marathon since Greg Meyer in 1983. Running with a two-fold purpose of fulfilling his dream of winning Boston and helping city and the entire country avenge the horrors of the 2013 race, Keflezighi, an Eritrean-born American, ran away from the field early on and fended off a late charge from Kenya’s Wilson Chebet to break the tape on Boylston Street in a personal best 2 hours, 8 minutes and 37 seconds. His victory was one of the highlights of a near-perfect weekend in Boston, which included a tribute to the victims of first responders of the horrific events of the terrorist bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon. While most runners decried the terrorist bombing acts of 2013 in the days prior to this year’s marathon, the ever-earnest Keflezighi took it to heart. In the days before the race, Keflezighi met with the family of Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy killed while watching last year’s race. And he ran with the names of Richard and the three other people who died last spring scrawled on the corners of his race bib.
