Leo Manzano kicked to a victory in the men’s 1500-meter final at the USA Track & field Championships over the weekend, sprinting from near the back of the pack to cross the line ahead of runner-up Pat Casey and third-place finisher Lopez Lomong.
Manzano found himself well back with 300 meters left, but he put his finishing speed on display over the remainder of the final lap. He stopped the clock in 3:38:63, with Casey clocking a 3:38:94 and Lomong a 3:39:11. Manzano ran the bell lap in 52.7 seconds.
“I was a little bit worried after 800 meters,” Manzano said. “Once I saw that nothing was literally opening up, I started to get a little nervous.
“You know, it’s a blessing. As you guys know, I spent a year and a half without a sponsor. Probably the roughest year.”
Manzano now has five national titles on his resume: Two 1500m wins at both indoors and outdoors, and the 2014 road mile.
