Documentary About “Caballo Blanco” In The Works

The producer of a biographical movie about Micah True, aka, "Caballo Blanco," is trying to get funding through a KickStarter campaign.

A new documentary film about one of the main characters in Born to Run could be released soon.

Although a movie adaptation of the best-selling book Born to Run has been stalled a bit in recent years, a documentary movie profiling one of the central figures of the book could be coming out soon if a recently launched KickStater campaign is successful. The “Run Free” movie, directed and produced by filmmaker Sterling Noren, tells the story of Micah True, otherwise known as “Caballo Blanco” in the book.

After learning of the plight of the Tarahumara (or Raramuri) people in the mid-1990s, True, a vagabond trail running pioneer who had spent time in Colorado, Hawaii and Guatemala, among other places, took it upon himself to try to help them embrace their ancient running roots while also trying to find ways to help their impoverished society. He eventually built a small adobe house in Batopilas, Mexico, spending winters there and summers in Boulder, Colo. He also started a 50-mile race that helped draw attention and assistance to the people of the Copper Canyon region. The biographical film will explore both True’s life but also his concern for the Raramuri people. The KickStarter campaign to help fund “Run Free” launched on June 21 and will expire in 40 days.

“I have been working on this project since I first met Micah True in Urique in March 2009,” Noren says. “Now, five years later, we are getting close to realizing our dream of telling Micah’s story through a feature-length documentary film. The movie has a good rough-cut, but there are a few more things to be done including a couple of interviews, color correction, audio mix, etc. And then…marketing the movie and film festivals around the world.”
