It’s not a common occurrence to find hundreds of die-hard runners taking to the streets of a major American city in the middle of the night, but that’s exactly what happens at this event. Competitors try to run as many laps in downtown Philadelphia as possible, alone or as part of a relay team. Proceeds benefit the Back on My Feet charity, an organization dedicated to transforming lives of the homeless through running.
Goshen Gallop 10K
July 19; Goshen, Vt.
This race, held on dirt and gravel roads of rural Goshen, is not for the faint of heart. Runners are challenged with a climb up to 2,100 feet but are rewarded with stunning views of the Green Mountain National Forest. This year’s race monies go for a worthy cause: rebuilding trail bridges that were destroyed during Hurricane Irene.
NYRR New York Giants Run of Champions 5K
July 20; East Rutherford, N.J.
If you’ve always dreamed of scoring a touchdown where the New York Giants play, then lace up your running shoes. The race’s finish line is located in MetLife Stadium’s end zone. But if football isn’t your thing, still consider giving this one a shot, as the pancake-flat course offers the potential for a fast finish time.
