Last month, I talked about why I don’t listen to music when I run outside. I’d much rather listen to the music of my run than get distracted by the tunes coming out of my iPod. However, I do listen to music when I run on the treadmill. That is a must!

Pandora is my go-to source for upbeat music to keep me distracted from the mundane of running in place. My favorite stations are Pop and Hip Hop Power Workout, Pop Fitness and No Doubt Radio. I especially dig it when old school songs from my past come on. How can you not run a little faster to Salt-n-Peppa or No Doubt? I sing along and just have a good time. The miles fly by as fast as they can on a treadmill.

Since I don’t listen to music that often, I’m enlisting my cadet, Kailey Ingerman, to help me out. She’s a fan of running with music and is more than happy to share what songs pump her up.

Assuming that I am not running with other people, I try to only listen to music during every other run. That way, I get comfortable with and without music.

I like to listen to music during a race. The patterns and the beats of the songs help me focus, calm me down and help me maintain my pace. I take my race playlists very seriously. I have specific playlists for shorter distance races (i.e. 5Ks), as well as for longer, harder races (i.e. half marathons.)

The half marathon playlists are typically filled with some longer songs that may have slower beats per minute, but have a steady rhythm. “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin and “4th of July, Asbury Park” by Bruce Springsteen always make the cut. They both have tempos that I like to match with my running and are around 7-8 minutes long.

A few days before a race, I make a brand new playlist of songs—that is, songs I don’t consistently run to during training runs—that I will look forward to hearing come race day.

Here’s a playlist I made for a recent 10K race. I mixed in some really upbeat songs with a couple of slower, longer songs. I like to put some of the faster songs toward the end when I am hurting and need a boost.
